The 2026 Australian Open draw, released on Thursday, suggests a potential matchup between British number 1 Emma Raducanu and world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka. This marks Raducanu’s first guaranteed seed spot in over three years. However, she faces a tough lineup in the bottom half of the draw, including a likely third-round match against Sabalenka.

The Road to a Blockbuster

28th-seed Raducanu faces Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew in her Melbourne opener. Sawangkaew is a strong opponent in her first Grand Slam main draw. To face, in the second round, either potent Anastasia Potapova, who prefers an aggressive game, or steady in-line hitter Suzan Lamens.

However, the headlines of today revolve around the looming specter of Sabalenka. The top-ranked player, who had a great season in 2025 and won the US Open, will start as the favourite at this Australian Open. For Raducanu, this draw appears to be a scenario of “out of the frying pan and into the fire.”

Form and Momentum

The two women come into the first major of the year with quite a difference in form. Sabalenka began last season by winning a title in Brisbane. She defended it at the start of 2026, using the same powerful game that led to her 63-win season.

Emma Raducanu, on the other hand, brings more questions than answers to Melbourne. After a strong showing in 2025 that put her back in the top 30, it’s disappointing to see Raducanu lose in the second round of the Hobart International. She fell to Australian wildcard Taylah Preston with a score of 2-6, 4-6. Raducanu seems to have addressed her athletic and power issues, but the wind may still affect her in Melbourne.

The Tactical Hurdle

In terms of head-to-head statistics, Sabalenka has proven to be “Kryptonite” for the 23-year-old Brit. Their head-to-head record is now 3-0 for the Belarusian. Their last match was at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. In that fiercely contested third round, Sabalenka dominated Raducanu.

The only challenge for Raducanu lies in the physical domain. Although the young one has the tactics and punch required to trouble the rest of the tour, the “heavy ball” game of Sabalenka might just box the young one in. If Raducanu wants to win in the next round, she needs to boost her first-serve percentages. This will prevent Sabalenka from attacking her second serve.

What’s at Stake?

“This event is all about leaving my mark on history,” Sabalenka said. “Since I won back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024, I am eager to win it again to take it back from Madison Keys, who won it from me last year.”

“The aim is clear: to crack the third-round barrier in majors,” said Raducanu. In 2025, Raducanu made it to the last 32 in three of the four majors. In each of these majors, her progress was halted by one of the “big three” players: Sabalenka, Swiatek, or Rybakina.

The Australian Open gets underway this Sunday, January 18. If both women hold their rankings, the tennis world is eager for a thrilling match this Friday or Saturday at Rod Laver Arena.
