On a routine walk in June 2024, Dr. Mosley ventured onto a well-known yet perilous trail on the cliffs by Pedi Bay. Although this path is quite common amongst residents and visitors, it is quite bad due to the rocks and large cliffs that go down steeply.
In some parts, the passage is very small, with the risk of falling from the edges of the cliffs, which are above the water.
Dr. Mosley, known for his adventurous spirit and passion for physical activity, went for a walk along this very route. Sadly, he did not come back, and Greek authorities had to conduct a search and rescue operation.
Dr. Mosley’s disappearance was reported, and with it, the target operations for his rescue and location commenced, with the participation of law enforcement agencies, local residents, and other search and rescue units.
Drones and helicopters were used to survey the rocky cliffs and coastline near Pedi Bay, focusing on areas known for their steep drops and uneven surfaces. Rescuers were anxious that Mosley could have tumbled from one of these threatening cliffs or be trapped further back on the Isles.
The operation became particularly aggressive at the last point of entry, which was along the coastal path between Pedi and Saint Nicholas Beach.
Although scenic, this path is largely unfriendly with its loose ground and steep slopes that, in some cases, render hikers who are used to such terrain helpless. With no immediate clues as to Dr. Mosley’s whereabouts, concerns grew for his safety.
One of the primary reasons why Pedi Symi is dangerous is the rugged and rocky terrain of the mid-east, which makes some parts of the island hard to access.
To some people who love climbing hills and interacting with the environment, Pedi Symi can be enticing and dangerous at the same time. Slipping surfaces, steep inclines, and hanging cliffs endanger hikers that are not familiar with the geographical area.
